The first Gundam adventure produced and broadcast in high-definition, Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (2007) takes place in 2307 A.D., rather than in the Universal Century or the Alternate Universe. Its reserves of fossil fuel exhausted, Earth relies on a network of solar power-gathering satellites linked to the planet by enormous elevator-towers for energy. Three international blocs struggle to control the planet: the Union of Solar Energy and Free Nations led by the United States; the A.E.U. or Advanced European Union; and the Eurasian confederation, the Human Reform League. Amid growing political tensions, four staggeringly powerful Gundams appear, representing Celestial Being, a mysterious organization dedicated to eliminating warfare. Piloted by teenage prodigies Lockon Stratos, Setsuna Seiei, Allelujah Haptism, and Tieria Erde, the Gundams reduce the hardware of hostile armies, mercenaries, and terrorists to so much scrap metal in a matter of minutes. Their high-handed tactics may win battles, but they alienate many people. The plot of Gundam 00 feels like an unsuccessful mixture of Gundam Wing and Full Metal Panic. The four hot-headed pilots squabble like Heero, Duo, Trowa, Quatre and Chang, and Setsuna conceals a traumatic past that recalls Sosuke Sagara's childhood in Helmajistan. But Setsuna lacks Sosuke's appeal and humor, and the flat vocal performances don't convey a sense of chemistry among the pilots. Mobile Suit Gundam 00 suffers from too many characters and too much backstory: the filmmakers spend so much time explaining who's who and what's going on where, there's isn't much left for character development or a narrative arc.
